Mphebatho Cultural Museum

A place where every corner echoes the history, culture and the spirit of the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela

About Us

Culture & History

The museum tells the story of the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela, a Tswana-speaking community historically divided between Moruleng (South Africa) and Mochudi (Botswana) due to colonial-era borders..

In 1870, conflicts with the Transvaal Boers led to the public flogging of Kgosi Kgamanyane by Paul Kruger, prompting part of the tribe to migrate to Botswana. Despite this division, both communities have remained culturally connected.
